The amazing "Marfa Lights" reported by cowboys back in the 1800's are still just as mysterious and unexplained today as they were back then. The Indians believed them to be the spirits of falling stars.
Just a few miles east of Marfa, TX. we pulled into the stretched-long parking lot for a possible chance encounter of these illusive lights. It was a solitary wait, being pretty much alone here in the 4,800 foot desert until the sun set. From nowhere came a flood of people with the same dream, "Seeing the lights."
The sun set on the windy-warm afternoon and just as quickly the temperatures dropped to a long-john-wearing evening. Everyone around the observing platform was wrapped-up in their warmest Texas garb, excitingly chatting and waiting-waiting-waiting.
Our "Marfa Lights" this time around consisted of a blinking red light 30 miles away on a Mexican mountain and an almost full moon smiling in the night sky.
A good evening, all in all. In our minds we'll wear, "I TRIED TO SEE THE LIGHTS" T-shirt and no one booted us from our all night, parking lot, camping spot.
