We decided to stay in Sanderson, TX. a few days. I know it's cold all across the country so I won't complain, but I will keep checking the pipes to make sure they don't freeze-up.
The report yesterday of Sanderson being on the mat with the count at "9" wasn't totally accurate. For sure, it's taken some staggering blows in the last 60 years but it's resiliency should be a model for any town so battered.
With the decline of it's major industry, wool and mohair, a major drought, a devastating flood, the Interstate cutting off the Highway 90 traffic and finally the Southern Pacific RR pulling it terminal almost laid waste to this town.
After a bike ride through and around many of the back-streets yesterday, I realized this is a town on the rebound. The town's first ever public sewer system is now in place, storm run-off, stone lined ditching, three schools, high school, junior high and elementary. A recently passed 14 million bond signals the residents of Terrell county are serious about education. The brand new visitors center being constructed tells me Sanderson is quickly on the rise to be the shining star of Highway 90 and southern Texas.
