BOOM AND BUST
Our last of two days here in Zapata, TX. have been quiet and sobering. We're in a small, cozy, RV stop-over, calling it a park would give the wrong impression, only 4 campers fill the 15 spaces. Nice.
A reservoir created by damming the Rio Grande River, called Falcon Lake, produced a great deal of economic hope for this town in 1954 when the river was initially corked. Businesses began popping up in places only cactus grew, RV parks sprange-up in anticipation and game fishermen sharpened thier hooks and booked passage to this once sleepy town.
The boom soon fizzled when the drought years drastically lowered the fake lake leaving the docks, local retailers, and RV parks high and dry. The final coup came when the drug smugglers took charge of the lake and began violent, pirate-type holdups of the few remaining fishermen. Last year one American was shot by the drug cartels and to date his body has not been recovered.
A similar scene plays out continually along our Mexican/US border. Where is our Government? Is this a political hot-potato? Are our protecting forces stretched too thin in faraway places to defend the home border? Does drug money affect decisions in high places?
A cold rain here this morning, no one is going fishing.
