Spirit of America, alive and......
Margie at war with China.
A hundred miles west of Savannah, GA. just south of Helena on the side of the road is where I got to meet Margie Selph. Margie owns and operates a small roadside stand offering 20 different typs of pecans and jams. She was about the same age as I and had plenty to say about the current state of affairs of the United States. Being directly informed about her main product, pecans, she related that China had bought all but three of the major pecan producers in Georgia and “they” were also heavily involved in the cotton industry of “her” state.
Her signature jams, “TOE and FROG jam” are “The best ya’ll ever swala,” she said, with a wink.
“The best has been and we were lucky enough to have lived it. I feel so sorry for my kids and grand kids, they’ll never know the real America we lived. It’s used-up and we've (she pointed her work-worn finger at me) gone and done it….lived high on the hog like everything would last forever. We’re pigs with no thoughts about anyone but ourselves," she finished with a far away look on her face. We shook hands in silent agreement, our hands lingering as I looked direct and deep into her sad and angry eyes. So it goes.
That’s the cheery news from “On the blue roads” 30 miles north of the Florida state line in Lakeland, GA.
