SLAB CITY - Like giving ice cream to a pig.

Three miles east of Niland, CA. the US Marine Corp established the 640 acre Camp Dunlap Training Facility in 1942 and closed it down in 1961. The buildings were razed and sold but the cement foundations were left to bake in the sun, thus creating "SLAB CITY" for the new inhabitants, RV'ers. All went well for a few years until the garbage began to pile up and the open pit toilets began producing noxious methane in the sweltering sun of southern California. The cost for living here, and many do "live" here 12 months of the year, is the slight inconvenience of doing without water, electricity or sanitary facilities. The up-side, it's free.

Upon entering Slab City one may feast their eyes on the following sights. Who ever put this "testament" together sure must enjoy painting. How many thousands of gallons of paint used to create this colorful temple to God, one can only guess. Maybe Ken Jennings knows.

The road to oz.
And now for a look inside an architech's mescaline mind.

Love comes in many colors.
Is this someone's conception of heaven?
One brush over the line.
My question: "Who buys all ths paint?"

Nine chances to get it right.

Young and old, everybody loves a circus.

Moving heaven and earth.

Love is not without its perils.

The State of California has scheduled the wrecking ball (So it goes) for Slab City.  Exactly when it will swing is still conjecture, but surely it will sweep the slabs clean if, and this is only a"maybe if" the inhabitants don't take the responsibility to clean the place up---and QUIT going poo in open pits.

If at first you don't succeed, drop back 10 and punt.
